I spend a fair amount of time reading, and I enjoy exploring mystery fiction through many authors. My Book Nook is a forum to share some of the gems I have found along the way.

There are different ways of defining the many genres of mystery and crime fiction. As a tool to help people find authors and books they may enjoy, my reviews refer to six genres of mystery fiction.

The Shardlake series of mysteries, by C. J. Sansom, is set in England just after the Reformation in the 1500s. I have categorized these books as legal mysteries because the main character

This article is about folk rock in general, especially American folk rock. For British folk rock in particular, see British 8️⃣ folk rock

Folk rock is a genre of rock music with heavy influences from English folk and American folk music.[1] Combining 8️⃣ the elements of folk and rock music, it arose in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom in the 8️⃣ mid-1960s.[2][3] In the U.S., folk rock emerged from the folk music revival. Performers such as Bob Dylan and the Byrds—several 8️⃣ of whose members had earlier played in folk ensembles—attempted to blend the sounds of rock with their pre-existing folk repertoire, 8️⃣ adopting the use of electric instrumentation and drums in a way previously discouraged in the U.S. folk community. The term 8️⃣ "folk rock" was initially used in the U.S. music press in June 1965 to describe the Byrds' music.

The commercial success 8️⃣ of the Byrds' cover version of Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and their debut album of the same name, along with 8️⃣ Dylan's own recordings with rock instrumentation—on the albums Bringing It All Back Home (1965), Highway 61 Revisited (1965), and Blonde 8️⃣ on Blonde (1966)—encouraged other folk acts, such as Simon & Garfunkel, to use electric backing on their records and new 8️⃣ groups, such as Buffalo Springfield, to form. Dylan's controversial appearance at the Newport Folk Festival on 25 July 1965, where 8️⃣ he was backed by an electric band, was also a pivotal moment in the development of the genre.

During the late 8️⃣ 1960s in Britain and Europe, a distinct, eclectic British folk rock style was created by Pentangle, Fairport Convention and Alan 8️⃣ Stivell. Inspired by British psychedelic folk and the North American style of folk rock, British folk rock bands began to 8️⃣ incorporate elements of traditional British folk music into their repertoire, leading to other variants, including the overtly English folk rock 8️⃣ of the Albion Band and Celtic rock.

[ MORE: 2024-24 Premier League festive fixtures - who, when and where? ]

After winning the Club World Cup last week, 💰 the three-time defending Premier League champions (37 points) now sit five points back of leaders Liverpool with a game in 💰 hand to reach the halfway point of the 2024-24 season. Everton (16 points), meanwhile, remain 17th, now just one point 💰 above Luton Town, who have a game in hand of their own.

It was absolutely all Manchester City for much of 💰 the first half, with Everton having just one shot — a Beto header which went wide of the 18-yard box 💰 altogether in the 1st minute — prior to the opening goal. Jordan Pickford made a double save to keep the 💰 game scoreless in the 14th minute as Matheus Nunes and Julian Alvarez had plenty of the goal to aim at, 💰 but each hit their shot right at the Everton ‘keeper.

Pickford made four saves in the opening half-hour, keeping the Toffees 💰 level until they could fashion their first real scoring chance of the game. It came in the 29th minute, as 💰 Rodri was dispossessed on the edge of his own penalty area, facing his own goal. Dwight McNeil dribbled toward the 💰 end line and crossed to the top of the six, where Jack Harrison arrived and applied the finish against his 💰 former club.

Everton led at halftime, but not for much longer after the restart. Phil Foden was left all by his 💰 lonesome 25 yards from goal, found by Bernardo Silva, not closed down quickly enough to block a beauty of a 💰 shot off his wand of a left foot. Pickford desperately dove low and to his left, but Foden found a 💰 keyhole in the bottom corner to make it 1-1.

but these stories could just as easily be described as historical novels. C.J. Sansom does …
